Kashmiri Street Vendors Targeted Across India Due to Religious Identity

World/India

Kashmiri street vendors across India are increasingly being targeted, reportedly due to their religious and regional identity. Human rights groups and local sources warn that these attacks, ranging from harassment to physical assault, are creating widespread fear among the community.

Every year, thousands of Kashmiri traders travel to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Jaipur, Indore, and Pune to sell shawls, carpets, dried fruits, and handicrafts. While they are seasonal visitors, local tensions or political unrest often make them the first targets of violence.

Human rights advocates say that social media rumours or communal flare ups often paint Kashmiri traders as “outsiders” or “suspect elements.” This has led to incidents of vandalism, theft, physical attacks, and forced displacement. While these events are isolated, they have a chilling effect on the community.

One vendor, who requested anonymity, said: “We come here only to earn a living. But once our identity is known, the atmosphere changes. Sometimes we even receive threats.”

The problem has intensified since India revoked Article 370 in 2019, converting Jammu and Kashmir into a union territory. Political debates and heightened sensitivities over Kashmir have spilled into other states. Analysts note that although most vendors have no political involvement, they are sometimes caught in communal backlash.

Human rights groups urge stronger preventive measures. While police occasionally intervene to restore order, responses vary across regions. Activists say protecting vulnerable migrant traders should be a priority for both state and central authorities.

Government officials have repeatedly stated that discrimination based on religion or region will not be tolerated. Legal action has been taken in some cases, but critics argue that proactive measures such as awareness campaigns and community engagement are needed to prevent recurrence.

Experts also warn that identity based polarization makes marginalized groups particularly vulnerable. Many Kashmiri vendors live in rented accommodations, lack local networks, and have minimal security. Economic stress in host regions can further inflame tensions, making them easy targets.

Trade associations representing Kashmiri vendors are calling for practical safeguards, including helplines and coordination centres to provide immediate assistance. They also advocate cultural exchanges and inter state cooperation to build trust and understanding between communities.

Observers stress that attacks on Kashmiri vendors are not just a law-and-order issue they reflect broader social tolerance. In a diverse country like India, coexistence and respect are crucial to stability. Without concerted efforts, even isolated violence can undermine this foundation.

Kashmiri traders continue their seasonal journeys, trying to make a living while navigating the threat of hostility. Ensuring their safety and dignity, experts say, requires more than policing it demands awareness, social responsibility, and a commitment to tolerance from the wider community.
