Protecting Journalists in Bangladesh: Upholding Press Freedom

In recent weeks, Bangladesh has witnessed a worrying rise in attacks on journalists, a trend that strikes at the heart of press freedom. Human rights organizations report that in October 2025 alone, at least 34 incidents were recorded, affecting 48 journalists. These incidents have ranged from physical assaults to threats, intimidation, and even vandalism of newsroom property. Such events are more than isolated occurrences—they send a troubling message about the state of press freedom in the country.

The attacks can be grouped into three broad categories. First, physical assaults, which have included attacks with blunt objects and destruction of office equipment. Second, legal and administrative pressures, where journalists face lawsuits or other forms of intimidation aimed at discouraging independent reporting. Third, social and psychological pressures that have led many journalists to self-censor, raising concerns about the quality and independence of reporting.

Several factors contribute to this alarming trend. Political rivalries and the competition for influence often place journalists in vulnerable positions. Investigative reporting, particularly on corruption or controversial issues, can provoke retaliation from powerful individuals or groups. Additionally, legal frameworks, including certain cyber and information laws, sometimes create situations where journalists face heightened risks. A lack of accountability for perpetrators further emboldens those who threaten or attack the press.

The consequences are significant. Press freedom is directly affected when journalists under threat avoid reporting on sensitive issues. The profession itself becomes riskier, discouraging young talent and potentially lowering professional standards. Most importantly, the public’s access to reliable information is curtailed, which can undermine informed civic participation and weaken democratic processes.

International organizations have voiced concern over these developments. Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists have urged authorities to act swiftly. Independent investigations, mechanisms to protect journalists, and accountability for offenders are essential to safeguard press freedom.

Recent incidents illustrate the urgency of these measures. During the coverage of a university football match, for example, journalists were physically attacked and some sustained injuries while equipment was damaged. Stories like this underline both the risks journalists face daily and the need for effective protections that allow them to carry out their work safely.

Ensuring the safety and independence of journalists is not just a matter for the media—it is a matter for society as a whole. A free and secure press fosters transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse. Protecting journalists strengthens democracy and nurtures a culture of openness and trust.

Bangladesh now has a critical opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to press freedom. Through legal safeguards, political will, and public support, the country can ensure journalists can report without fear, empowering citizens with the information they need. The protection of journalists is, ultimately, the protection of democracy itself.
