The use of religious symbols in Bangladesh’s social and political landscape is nothing new.

However, the recent debate over flags carrying the Islamic declaration of faith (Kalima) has highlighted a deeper issue in our society the tendency to value emotions more than education and critical thinking. Some people present these flags as the only true symbol of Islam, while others immediately label them as symbols of terrorism.

In reality, the issue is far more complex. Much of this confusion comes from a lack of historical knowledge, religious understanding, and awareness of the political context.

One thing should be made clear from the beginning: Islam is not represented by any single flag.

It is a universal religion based on the Holy Quran, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and belief in the Oneness of Allah.

The Kalima “La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur Rasulullah” is the declaration of faith for every Muslim. It is at the heart of Islamic belief.

However, Islam does not prescribe any specific flag, color, or design as its official symbol.

At the same time, history shows that some extremist and militant groups have used different versions of flags bearing the Kalima to promote their political agendas and violent ideologies.

By displaying sacred religious words, they have tried to give religious legitimacy to their actions. This has created confusion among many people.

Some now believe that such flags are identical to Islam itself, while others assume that any flag carrying the Kalima represents extremism. Both views are misleading because they ignore the broader historical and religious context.

One of the biggest strategies used by extremist groups is the exploitation of religious emotions. They understand that people are deeply attached to their faith. By using Islamic words, symbols, and slogans, they attempt to influence public opinion and attract supporters.

Yet their actions directly contradict the teachings of Islam. Islam promotes peace, justice, compassion, and respect for human life. It does not permit the killing of innocent people, spreading hatred, creating instability, or using violence to impose an ideology.

Bangladesh has witnessed such attempts in the past, and in some cases, they continue even today. Certain extremist organizations have tried to mislead young people by using religious symbols and emotional appeals.

Although they speak in the language of religion, their real goals are political power, violence, and creating fear in society. This is why people should not react emotionally whenever they see a religious symbol. Instead, they should ask who is using it, for what purpose, and in what context.

Another major weakness in our society is that emotions often outweigh education and reason. On social media, people frequently accept images, videos, or statements without checking whether they are true.

Rumors, misinformation, and half-truths spread quickly, shaping public opinion before the facts are known. This harms not only individuals but society as a whole.

Ignorance and emotional manipulation create the perfect environment for extremism and division.

Extremism can never represent any religion. Those who commit acts of terror in the name of faith are not only a threat to national security but also damage the true image of their religion.

Their actions create false perceptions about Muslims around the world and unfairly place Islam under suspicion.

Standing against extremism, therefore, is not only about protecting the state it is also about protecting the dignity of religion and the values of humanity.

The time has come to give greater importance to education, research, and critical thinking instead of blind emotion. Before expressing opinions on religious matters, people should seek knowledge from reliable and trustworthy sources. Rather than reacting to a flag, slogan, or symbol, we should understand its history, purpose, and context.

The media, educational institutions, families, and religious leaders all have an important role to play in preventing misinformation and reducing confusion.

Ultimately, the debate over the Kalima flag is about much more than a piece of cloth. It reflects the way we think as a society.

Emotions are a natural part of human life, but when they replace knowledge and reason, people become vulnerable to manipulation.

Extremist groups are fully aware of this weakness and exploit it to spread their ideology.

Therefore, respecting the sacred words of Islam also means rejecting anyone who uses those words to justify violence, hatred, or extremism.

Only an educated, informed, and rational society can truly honor religion, reject terrorism, and protect future generations from falling into the trap of misinformation and radicalization.
