After a prolonged lull, concerns over militant activity in Bangladesh have resurfaced, sparking nationwide discussion. The issue gained traction following the circulation of a warning issued by police headquarters, raising questions about whether militant groups have remained inactive or were quietly regrouping.

Security analysts and human rights observers argue that militancy rarely disappears entirely. Instead, such groups tend to retreat, reorganize, and wait for favourable political or security conditions before re-emerging. According to experts, this period of “silence” often reflects strategic rebuilding rather than inactivity.

Recent developments have also drawn attention to possible regional linkages and cross-border risks. In particular, allegations involving connections with the Pakistan-based group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan have intensified concerns. Reports suggesting that a member of the armed forces may have had links to the group have prompted internal investigations and heightened scrutiny within security institutions.

Another key concern is the escape of a significant number of convicted militants following political unrest in 2024. Many of them remain at large, which law enforcement officials believe could be contributing to the renewed activity. Observers also point to shifting political dynamics as a factor that may have allowed previously fragmented networks to reorganize.

Human rights advocates stress that the issue should not be viewed as sudden or isolated. They argue that militant elements have long existed within society at varying levels and may now be exploiting recent changes to regain momentum.

Experts further warn that any signs of extremist influence within state institutions pose serious risks to national security and public trust. They emphasize the need for transparent investigations, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law in addressing such threats.

Law enforcement authorities, however, maintain that they remain vigilant. Specialized units continue to monitor extremist activities, while several suspects have reportedly been re-arrested or placed under surveillance in recent months.
